THE ALBUM---story behind the songs

2005-05-16

"YOU EITHER DO OR YOU DON'T"
(Michelle Poe, Vicky McGeehee, D. Vincent Williams)
Tired of indecision, I wrote this song effortlessly, releasing my frustration over the way people often receive mixed messages and don't always get a definite sign as to where they stand in a relationship. This song comes right out and asks for a decision. I like the confidence displayed in the lyrics, which imply that she can handle whatever the answer might be!

"ONE IN A ROW"
(Tony Martin, Mark Nesler)
I've always respected the talented songwriting of Tony MArtin and Mark Nesler. This song is no exception. When I first heard it, Mark's wife, Jennifer Hanson, was singing the demo, and I fell in love with both the song and her voice. I appreciate and identify with the strength that the singer conveys despite the fact that she may still be aching inside over someone. I was thrilled when Jennifer agreed to sing harmony on this track; it adds a rich texture to this beautiful song.

"THAT'S NOT ME"
(Michelle Poe, Sharon Vaughn, Don Cook)
This song spilled out of us after we'd talked about the way women often change who they are for the sake of love. I've seen friends in relationships where they were not truly happy but didn't have the courage to get out of it. Sometimes we find ourselves changing who we are to please the one we are with, but that only laves us feeling unsatisified. This song is a reminder that inner strength is needed to separate ourselves from unhealthy situations.

"THIS AIN'T LOVE ANYMORE"
(Don Cook,Paul Nelson, Larry Boone)
I recorded this song so early in my record making process that I had almost forgotten about it ! I like the driving tempo and country flavor it adds to this record.

"WHEN DID YOU KNOW"
(Monty Criswell, Tim Mensey)
This one touches me deeply because it is so painfully sad. I always seem to wrap my heart around these kinds of songs. How cruel it is to believe in love with such vulnerability only to discover that someone has played a careless game with your emotions. This song is gut-wrenchingly lonesome..the main reason why I love it so much.

"GORGEOUS LIES"
(Michelle Poe, Hillary Lindsey, Angelo)
This song has an elegant way of describing dangerous deceipt. Having my co-writer, Hillary Lindsey, sing harmony helped capture the pain-induced vibe we felt in the room the day we wrote this one. We also included a string part from the Nashville Smyphony Orchestra that completed the mood. I've definitely been through what I sing about here. I've learned that the most important thing you can do in this type of experience is practice forgiveness, rise above it and keep moving forward!

"LOVE SURE LOOKS GOOD ON YOU"
(Shara Johnson, John Hobbs)
This song has stayed close to my heart for the three years that I worked on this album. This was one that I recorded when I signed a developmental deal with Gaylord Records under the direction of Tim Dubois. When the label suddenly closed, I used this song to shop for another deal at Dreamworks Records. James Stroud heard something so magical in this song that he signed me immediately.

"LOVE CITY"
(Candy Cameron, Ron Harbin, Steven Sheehan)
It's ironic how the happiest song on the album was the most frustrating to record in the studio. I couldn't convince myself that I had sung it any better than the girl on the demo (Gretchen Wilson)!! My producers disagreed about the modulation and tempo, and the musicians wavered back and forth regarding the arrangement. We almost gave up on it..but I'm glad we didn't as I am very pleased with the outcome...and it turned out to be the "B" side of my first single.

"TEACH ME AGAIN"
(Michelle Poe, Rivers Rutherford, Sam Hogin)
This was one of the very first songs I wrote when I signed my publishing deal with Sony ATV Tree. I was nothing but nerves and young in my writing, but graciously my experienced writing partners helped me to conceptualize and shape the memorable moment of my first "falling in love" exeperience.

"ROCK MY BABY"
(Greg Crowe, Bill Labounty)
When I first got a hold of this song, I put my cd player on repeat and played it over and over and over. I loved the groove, the lyrics and the music. I realized that even though I haven't yet experienced holding a child of my own in my arms, the word "baby" can also mean anyone in your life that you turn to for comfort in a time of hardship or need. This one usually tops the list of everyone's favorite on this record.

"JUST ONE OF THE BOYS"
Shaunna Bolton, Tammy Hyler, Adrienne Follese)
This song was written especially with me in mind after someone described me as a "gunslinger with grace"....a unique blend of honky tonk attitude and classy femininity. This was my first single and video! It always gets a great response from the females...I guess there must be a lot of them like me who love tequila, pickup trucks, 'livin it up" and just being one of the boys every now and then!

"NOT AS SIMPLE AS THAT"
(Tony Martin, Mark Nesler)
I first discovered this song when I heard it on Mark Nesler's record, "I'm Just That Way". It sounded like a beautiful lullably with a contrasting not-so-innocent- message. I was hypnotized when I listened to the honesty of the lyrics coupled with the soothing melody beneath. I couldn't resist adding this artistic masterpiece to my project and closing the record with it.

Todd Sterling Review
Michelle Poe: Just
One Of The Boys
Album Review
by Todd Sterling

It looks like the hardest thing in Nashville these days isn’t getting a record deal, it’s keeping a record deal. Michelle Poe can bear witness to the fact. Poe, an eye-pleasing blonde with enough soul to fill the Grand Canyon, saw her DreamWorks debut, Just One Of The Boys, shelved shortly before it was to be released. Luckily, Poe is an exceptional musician – she currently holds down the bottom end in Dierks Bentley’s band – and a talented singer and songwriter, which means the probability of her signing with another label is extremely high.

Another plus for Poe (and her fans) is that she didn’t leave DreamWorks empty handed – the beautiful blonde trucked off a limited number of advance copies of her album when she left. It really is too bad DreamWorks didn’t release a second single (remember what happened with Josh Turner), because Poe has crafted a fine disc here. The title track and first single, "Just One Of The Boys," only scratches the surface of her talent. Whether she’s scuffing her boots across the hardwood, on the plucky and somewhat amorous "Love City," or nursing a busted heart, on the mournful "One In A Row," Poe’s music is captivating. The latter track is a lump-in-the-throat cut with just the right amount of fiddle, steel, and mandolin.

The Ohio-born, Florida-raised singer had a hand in writing four of the album’s twelve tracks. The slide-drenched "You Either Do Or You Don’t" finds Poe in a rocking mood as she pins her guy down and demands he clarify their relationship. Either you love me or you don’t, Poe tells her fence-sitting fellow, there’s no middle ground in her heart. "That’s Not Me," definitely the best song on the album, is a slow-burning cut that’s equal parts country, R&B, and pop. Poe’s voice drips with pure emotion as she slips into the skin of a woman who hides behind a mask in order to please her man. This song has hit written all over it.

"Gorgeous Lies," co-written by Poe, Hillary Lindsey, and Angelo, is a jangly number about a deceitful guy who wraps his lies in pretty paper but always reveals himself as a snake in the end. Poe stretches her elastic voice on the track, moving effortlessly into a falsetto to great effect. "Teach Me Again (Love Lessons)," another Poe co-write, aches from the inside out. The singer longs for the touch of the man who taught her how it feels to be loved. The organ-flecked "Rock My Baby" and the celestial "Not As Simple As That" are two of at least eight songs on the album that could have been released as singles.

It would be nice if the labels in Nashville started developing new artists again instead of dropping them when they don’t hit big right out of the gate. Just One Of The Boys proves that Michelle Poe has the talent, she just needs a chance to share it with the rest of the world.

Des Moines Register George Strait Concert Review

2004-12-10

..In a single song, Bentley's bassist, Michelle Poe, displayed more promise. She got to step up to the microphone and showcase her forthcoming debut single, "Just Like One of the Boys," which was sly and understated compared with Coffey's hard-sell style with her power ballads.

So the biggest surprise of the night might have been getting to hear Poe, a possible future star.

Meanwhile, Bentley moved into the big leagues with this tour, having played clubs for the last six months. But that's what a No.1 hit ("What Was I Thinkin'") will do for a career. Still, he seemed in full control on what must have been a nerve-wracking night. He also let his multi-talented bass player Michelle Poe take a shot at the mike to introduce her upcoming single "One of the Boys." And after sleeping on a bus with five other guys, for months at a time, she's surely writing from experience.

Bentley also told the crowd that he was there to see George Strait too -- and it's true. He and Poe were spotted in the crowd about halfway through Strait's set. Everybody else was too busy singing along to notice. - Craig Shelburne
